The INTOUCH Framework
A nervous system-centred & Trauma-Informed model for mental health treatment and professional development.
What is the INTOUCH Framework?
INTOUCH stands for Integrated Nervous System Training for Optimal Understanding, Co-Regulation & Healing. INTOUCH is a trauma-informed, nervous system-centred framework designed to help professionals and clients move beyond survival responses and into intentional, connected, purpose-driven living.

Created by Jessica E. Ferreira, this integrative model combines neuroscience, somatic work, and self-compassion to move people from knowing about trauma to apply it into daily living.

INTOUCH is not just a method—it’s a way of being present with the nervous system as the treatment plan.
Core Elements of the Framework
Neuroscience-Informed
Grounded in Polyvagal Theory and neuroplasticity research, it explains how the nervous system shapes safety, behaviour, and connection.
Relational & Embodied
Emphasises co-regulation and somatic awareness to support feelings of safety— it's not just about knowing you are safe, but to actually experience safety in yourself.
Practical & Applicable
Includes tools for nervous system regulation in therapy, supervision, and training.
Theoretical Influences
Polyvagal Theory
Dr Stephen Porges
Key Elements:
Brings the knowledge about how the nervous system works and plays out in our day to day lives through thoughts, behaviours, emotions and beliefs.

How it shapes INTOUCH:
People seek support for many different reasons. However, regardless the reason, they all have one thing in common, they are experiencing a challenge and want something to change. Polyvagal theory brings our attention inward, to our Nervous System and how it influences the way we navigate through the world. That is the focus of the INTOUCH, the nervous system is our treatment plan.
Internal Family Systems
Richard Schwartz
What it teaches:
We all have different “parts” inside us—like an anxious part, a protective part, or a part that carries pain. These parts are trying to help, even when they end up having negative effects on our lives.

How it shapes INTOUCH:
It encourages curiosity instead of judgment. It understand that a part has its function but is not you whole Self. You learn to listen to your inner world with compassion.
Sensorymotor Psychotherapy
Pat Odgen
What it teaches:
Trauma lives in the body—not just the mind. Things like posture, breath, and tension tell stories words can’t.

How it shapes INTOUCH:
You learn to notice body cues and use gentle, physical awareness to help release difficult experiences and support recovery.
Biopsychosocial & Systems Theory
What it teaches:
Our lives are shaped by stories, cultures, and systems around us—like family, community, race, gender, and power. Additionally, it is also shaped by our biology and psychological state.

How it shapes INTOUCH:
We work with the individual in context. Healing isn’t just about the body—it’s about honouring someone’s whole life and the world they live in.
Compassionate Inquiry
Gabor Maté
What it teaches:
There is a story behind every behaviour, a difficult past or an unmet need. Real recovery starts when we slow down and connect them with kindness.

How it shapes INTOUCH:
It teaches presence, softness, and curiosity. You don’t rush the process—you create space for people to feel truly seen and safe.
